Don Giovanni, Frank Gehry, Gustavo Dudamel, Kate Mulleavy, Laura Mulleavy, Rodarte

The sisters Mulleavy are following up their success with “Black Swan” to designing the costumes for LA Phil’s “Don Giovanni,” in May.  This production also includes the Dude, (not Jeff Bridges) Gustavo Dudamel conducting, and Frank Gehry doing set design, and coincidentally being performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall also designed by Mr. Gehry.  Wow.  That is just too fantastic for words.

Home grown talent!

Their Fra Angelico collection is on view in the Italian Renaissance gallery at LACMA.  It’s in their permanent collection so you have time to pencil it in.

Shame on Saturday

Michael Fassbender, Shame

I saw it this morning at the Landmark Theatres in W. LA.

Film books.

The bar. Tempted, but it was 10:30 in the morning.

I moved to SF before they did all the renovation. It’s quite different that the small little theaters that were here before. I had a Peet’s latte and popcorn with real butter. $9.50 for the matinee, and the seats were a leather couch. Boy things sure do change.

The movie was pretty intense. I’m glad I saw it during the day. Fassbender was tremendous. I hope he gets nominated.

She inspires everyone from photographers, fashion designers to everyday women who want to exude that effortless sensuality.  Her exotic eyes, tall slim frame, and innate intelligence cast a spell.

Angelina Maccarone’s, “Charlotte Rampling: The Look,” is a doc about the graceful, captivating, “icon of desire” (Maccarone’s words.)  Interviews with friends like Jurgen Teller and Peter Lindbergh give us a peek into her world.

Now playing in LA at Laemmle’s Music Hall.

Arianne Phillips, David Fincher, Los Angeles Times

I’m SO behind in reading my papers.  But I’d be remiss for not mentioning Dec. 18th, LA Times Image Section.  Lots of great articles on this year’s crop of exciting costumes.

On David Fincher’s “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”

On the surge in 20’s inspirations, “The Artist,” and Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby.”

This just illustrates how little time I have to actually go see movies!!!  Oy.  You single childless people go frolic carefree into the night and see them for me!

Charles and Ray Eames: The Architect and the Painter

American Masters, Charles & Ray Eames, Public Broadcasting Service, The Artist and the Painter

PBS’s American Masters documentary series paints a vivid portrait of the life and marriage of this prodigious and innovative couple who brought design and a modern aesthetic to the masses in 50’s and 60’s America.  Directed by Jason Cohn and Bill Jersey.

I recorded it and just watched it, and was surprised at how candid it was in delving into their marital troubles and Charles’ tendency to take credit.

If you missed it, see if PBS will run it again, and set your DVRs.

Tom Ford, Visionaries

OWN Visionaries, Tom Ford

Well I finally got around to watching Visionaries: Tom Ford, on OWN.  I missed it the first time around, set my DVR, then watched the whole season, to finally get to this one.  And it did not disappoint.  I was scared that this Oprah show would be a little too touchy-feely, but the format is documentary style and the subject speaks for him or herself about their background and their creative process.  And we get to watch them in the thick of creating.  Even ones I didn’t think I’d get into (Tyler Perry), I found pretty inspiring.

Tom speaks candidly about his quitting Gucci and YSL, and his process.  It’s such a treat to watch him do fittings and adjust the look of things.  He also directs films now (a true fashioneaste!) and hearing him talk about writing and directing his first film was interesting.  Don’t you think he should do an update (I hate the term reboot.  A reboot is just a restart, doing the same thing) of “American Gigolo?”  Wouldn’t that be just heavenly?  Great clothes and tons of sex.

Catch it if you can.

Vogue now online: all 120 years

Archive, Vogue

If you’ve got a spare $1,575 you can subscribe to the Vogue archives.  And that’s a yearly price.  Yes, you will have to renew.  Subscribers might get a price break, but with limited access.  What’s the point of that?  Anyways, every page, ads included, were scanned for you my dears.  Everything is indexed and cataloged so you can go right to the good stuff.

I’m a FIDM Alum, so I had access to their physical Vogue collection, but now I could just go online instead of trudging downtown.  It’s VERY tempting!  It’s nice flipping through pages and stumbling across something fantastic that you wouldn’t have seen otherwise, but it does save time to be able to get, say, all Audrey Hepburn images like that (snap!)

So graphic, but ladylike.

Love that hat! Love the way the feathers from her hat and the feathers from the bird languidly fall.

The colors! Orange, pink, magenta and black works here for some reason.

I will have to think about it…

Dallas Museum of Art, Jean-Paul Gaultier

The Dallas Museum of Art is one of two U.S. cities that will be showing his work.  Comprised of more than 140 haute couture and ready-to-wear pieces from the 1970’s to the present.  And yes, Madonna’s cone bra will be waiting for you.  It shows there till February 12th, 2012, then onto the de Young in SF in March.  Thank God it’s coming to the west coast!

Check out the museum shop.  Gaultier totes, hats, umbrellas, tees…

So cute!

LA Auto Show 2011

Audi, BMW, Honda, LA Auto Show, Michelle Wie, West Coast Customs

I went to the auto show yesterday. Now, I’m from Anchorage, AK, we don’t have auto shows up there, and all the years I’ve lived in LA I’ve never gone. I mean seriously, paying $ to see cars? Don’t get me wrong, I love a hot car, but this is LA, hot cars (and girls) are everyone. So ubiquitous, that it’s not that big a deal (to me.) So, I went. I have to say, it was pretty cool.

We did have a purpose. My mother-in-law needs a new car and we checked out the new models, sat in them, tried them on for size. But I was mainly interested in the presentation, and the new direction. After all, it is sorta a fashion show for cars, right? New colors, lines, redesigns, etc.

Honda's F1 car. Form, function, design, performance.

Kia, in my humble opinon, did the best merchandising. Right product (styling, options), right price, (inexpensive relatively speaking), right time (recession), for their customer (urban, young men). They collaborated with West Coast Customs on a few cars, and the new products look pretty dope.

Plaid, wood interior.

Back seat, step down knick knack holders.

Old school video game, turntable, and a little bit of mother nature for that California boy.

They did a Michelle Wie car. Michelle Wie is a young women's golfer. While a stretch, I think this is their attempt at getting urban/sporty girls attention.

This is a hot car. It's also electric with a 154 mile range. It has two engines on each front and rear axles. It goes from 0-62 in 4.8 seconds. F**k you, big oil. Your days are numbered if they keep making cars like this.

I must say, I do like Audis. I know BMW's drive better, but these always look better.

BMW's new i, all electric vehicles.

The future is here.

Arts and Crafts, Disney Grand Californian Hotel

We took the little guy to Disneyland for turkey day. We made a pit stop in the lobby of this hotel for his nap. Modeled after the Arts and Crafts movement in California, it’s grand and welcoming with beautiful pottery and metal work on display.

And not a dwarf or mouse in sight.
